J-Say Compatibility with Dragon Naturally Speaking 9.10 FAQ

This technical bulletin contains information concerning the compatibility of J-Say Pro 4.0 technology with the recently released Service Pack for Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 9.0. This updates the version number to 9.10.

While we do recommend upgrading your copy of Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 9.0 to take advantage of this Service Release, it will be necessary to download and install a J-Say Pro update to correct some technical difficulties and to improve the overall responsiveness of J-Say technology with newer high specification computer processors.

What do I Need?

While the below procedure is described using non-technical language, you may need to seek advice from your J-Say distributor if you feel you may experience difficulties with the installation. Your J-Say distributor can give you helpful advice concerning this update.

In order to use the update, you will need:

JAWS for Windows 7.10 build 500. This is available from the Freedom Scientific web site at the following link:

In Which Order do I Install the software?

A2:

In order to update your software, you should have JAWS for Windows 7.10 build 452, Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional 9.0 and J-Say Pro 4.01 or 4.02 on your system. Please do not worry if J-Say Pro 4.01 is installed as the 4.03 update usefully contains all the functionality which was available as part of the 4.02 update.

1. First, run the JAWS 7.10 build 500 program. This will update your JAWS software to build 500. It is likely that you will be prompted to re-start your computer following the installation process and if this is the case you should comply with the request. At this point J-Say functionality is lost.

2. Install the Dragon NaturallySpeaking Professional Service Pack 1 update. Although not prompted to do so at the end of the installation, we strongly recommend that you re-start your computer once the update has taken place.

3. Install the J-Say Pro 4.03 update, the prompts for which will be automatically announced by your JAWS software. At the end of the process you will be requested to re-start the computer and you should comply with the request.

The installation and updating of JAWS, Dragon and your J-Say software is now complete.

What Happens if I had previously installed JAWS 7.10 build 500 then J-Say Pro 4.01 or 4.02?

A3:

If you know that you have installed JAWS 7.10 build 500 on your computer prior to originally installing J-Say technology, there is no need to follow step 1 in the above installation sequence. Just move to step 2.

What Else Should I Know about the Update?

A4:

As part of the JAWS 7.10 build 500 update, a keystroke is provided which is Windows+Insert+F4. If a total loss of speech occurs, it is difficult to recover JAWS without rebooting the computer. However, a reboot provides no diagnostic information to assist Freedom Scientific in researching the underlying problem.

INSERT+WINDOWS Key+F4 is a new JAWS keystroke for emergency recovery. The new keystroke closes JAWS, terminates all related processes, and creates a memory dump file. The diagnostic information can be used to assist Technical Support. (Note: The keystroke will not work at the Windows Log In screen.) After issuing this command, you can restart JAWS to regain speech.

To assist users of laptop computers, an additional keystroke for this facility has been provided (not part of JAWS by default) which is Shift+Caps Lock+F12 (assuming the laptop layout has been selected).

Can I use Internet Explorer 7 with the New J-Say Pro Update?

Yes you can. We have taken the opportunity of preparing this update to make available the functionality provided to JAWS 7.10 to support Internet Explorer 7. This essentially means that you can use Internet Explorer version 7 with the functionality you have come to expect from J-Say technology within the context of using web pages. However, at this time we do not support the new Internet Explorer 7 features, such as Tabbed Navigation. This and other new features will be available to J-Say users when the new version is available in March 2007 in time for the CSUN conference in Los Angeles.

To ensure you are able to benefit from new J-Say functionality at that time, it is recommended that you enrole in our J-Say Pro Software Maintenance Agreement program which is available from all J-Say distributors. Making an investment in an SMA will ensure you receive the next two J-Say Pro upgrades and can save you money in addition to ensuring you have the latest J-Say product version at the time of its release. J-Say Pro SMA holders have the advantage of being able to download product upgrades from the Internet as soon as they are available.
