JAWS for Windows

Manufactured by Freedom Scientific, JAWS for Windows is a powerful accessibility solution that reads information on your screen using synthesized speech. JAWS provides many useful facilities that make it easier to use programs, edit documents, and read Web pages. With a refreshable braille display, JAWS can also provide Braille output in addition to, or instead of, speech. An array of versatile features and customizable options makes it possible to tailor JAWS for individual needs and preferences.

With JAWS access to the Internet is unparalleled. Using JAWS with Microsoft's Internet Explorer is easy! Additionally, JAWS supports the most popular office software products enabling visually impaired users to work in the same software environment as other Windows computer users. There are numerous other applications that are supported by JAWS, including word processors, financial and spreadsheet packages, e-mail and messaging applications, to name but a few.

For Braille users, JAWS provides functionality that improves the efficiency and quality of your work when using a Braille display. It also provides an accurate representation, in Braille, of what's displayed on your computer's screen.

There are numerous settings that allow JAWS to be extensively customized, including how much information is provided globally and within applications. Dozens of other options allow you to set voices, keystrokes, HTML preferences, verbosity levels, and more. With JAWS scripting, it is possible to customize the screen-reader to work with any application, such as proprietary software developed by large employers. The JAWS Context Sensitive Help, Hotkey Help and Tutor Message facilities all play a part in assisting new and experienced computer users become accustomed to the ways in which an application functions and all of these utilities can be customised when configuring JAWS to interact with existing or unknown environments.

There are two editions of JAWS available – Standard and Professional.

  • JAWS Standard for Windows XP Home, Windows Vista Home Basic and Windows Vista Home Premium.

  • JAWS Professional Edition for Windows XP Professional, Home, Windows 2000, Media Centre and Windows Vista.

Please be sure that you check the version of your operating system prior to purchasing JAWS for Windows in order that you obtain the correct release.

JAWS Helpful Information

In most situations, JAWS for Windows can be authorised and registered using the Internet. However if an Internet connection is not available, please contact us for assistance.

Support is available for individual and shared profiles, meaning that script files can be developed and shared with all employees within a company or they can be applied to an individual user without disturbing the default settings. This also means that individual speech and Braille user settings can be easily preserved in the event of a computer re-build.

Support for Remote Access is available via Citrix. Please note this requires additional authorisation.

Support for Specific Windows Applications

JAWS provides high quality support to visually impaired users to make browsing the Internet both easy and straightforward. A user can quickly navigate the next or prior instance of any web page element (such as links and headings), or bring into view a list of a specific element. Other Internet-based enhancements include “Place Markers” to bookmark specific page segments, “Custom Page Summary” allowing a user to move to or hear immediately part of a page when it is loaded, and the powerful “Custom Labels” facility lets anyone teach JAWS what to say or output in Braille when a web page element is encountered which may not conform to expected conventions.

JAWS provides tremendous access to Microsoft Office XP, 2003 and 2007 including menus, dialog boxes and the new ribbon bar. Windows Live and AOL Instant Messaging applications are also popular with people using JAWS, as are adobe Acrobat Reader and Winamp.
