Infotech - November and December 2008

The November and December edition of Infotech magazine contains the following items.

First, we have an interview with Humanware concerning the new solution available to allow people who are deaf-blind to gain more from the Braille Note in terms of communication with other people.  DBC is a new product and this interview provides excellent listening and valuable information about it.

Next, we have a series of presentations from the Visually Impaired Computer Society of Ireland Technology Day held in Cork recently.

We hear an excellent presentation concerning the advantages and disadvantages of using the Apple Mac when you are visually impaired.

The next item is a presentation from Ash Technology about the range of low vision products.

Debbie Platt from D D Aware talks about and demonstrates the K-Sonar.

Finally for the VICS presentations, we have a presentation concerning access to Digital Television services in Ireland.

We conclude with an item in three parts relating to access to television services in the UK.  We begin with an in depth demonstration of accessing BBC television output in several ways.  This is followed by a discussion with Infotech listener Steve Nutt concerning taking advantage of the ITV Catchup service and television programmes which can be accessed using iTunes.

In the next segment, we take a look at the Sky Plus system, the Portset freeview receiver and how audio description can be accessed via an integrated receiver available within some televisions.

Finally, we discuss the availability of audio described television programmes including the RNIB's new set-top box accessing the Freeview platform.

We already have some great articles planned for the January 2009 edition.
